Discussion:
Standard natural colors of snakes?

Greetings!

Does anyone know what are some of the standard natural solid colors of
different snakes
irregardless of whatever breed they might be (boas, cornsnakes, rat snakes,
etc..)?
I mean are there any snakes that are *naturally* all red or all brown or
all black or all
green or all just one solid color? I specifically don't mean snakes that
have been
cross bred by humans to try to intentionally produce a specific color
variation,
but rather snakes who's color variation is the result of a natural
occurence(s) in
the wild and is not a genetic abnormality either.
I'm thinking that if I decide to get a snake I think I'd like to have one
that is
a single solid color naturally, or if not that at least one that isn't the
result of human
manipulation of their bloodlines' traits. TIA. Peace.

I don't know of any snakes who are one solid color over their entire body.
Most have different-colored bellies, for example. However, if you're just
looking for primarily one solid color:

Black: black racers, indigo snakes, melanistic hognoses (they occur
naturally quite often), black kings
Brown: earth snakes, ground snakes, brown snakes, some coachwhips (in
general, none of these do terribly well in captivity)
Green: green snakes (_Opheodrys_)--can be difficult to keep
Yellow: some eyelash vipers

Hi, Chris!

Yep! That's what I meant. I'm just looking for primarily one solid
colour.
I'm not particularly concerned about their belly colour. Well as long as
it's not a yellow-bellied colour.

What about Brown snakes? Do they do well in captivity? Are there any
special requirements that they have as far as keeping them in captivity?
How
large an they grow? Is it legal to keep them in captivity in the greater
US?
I think I might like to get myself a brown snake. Are Brown snakes native
to,
or from Guam? Are they the snakes that the news says people in Hawaii are
afraid may get into Hawaii and kill off all of the endemic wild life
native to
the Hawaiian Islands?

Green: green snakes (_Opheodrys_)--can be difficult to keep
What is it that makes a particular breed of snake difficult to keep? Heat?
Lighting? Adequate space?

Yellow: some eyelash vipers
What about primarily red coloured snakes? Any particular breed of snake
that you can think of offhand that is "naturally" primarily red coloured?
Thanks. Peace.

That will leave out the green snakes, then.

Greater US? If that's where you are, why do you spell it 'colour?' :)

Those are brown tree snakes (_Boiga irregularis_, I think). Very different
from brown snakes (_Storeria dekayi_), which only reach around 18" long and
eat worms, slugs, etc. May or may not be legal to keep natives in your
state--check your regs.

Some people keep them, but only a few do so with any real success--you might
ask on kingsnake.com forums under "Garter and Ribbon Snakes" (closely
related, so their enthusiasts may have brown snake experience also).

They prey on caterpillars in the wild, which most people usually can't
provide in sufficient quantity year-round. Some individuals can be switched
to crickets.

I know there are a few, from South America and SE Asia, but the ones I'm
thinking of have brown/black heads (not to mention they may be venomous).

Don't forget African house snakes, which are captive-bred, small, docile
and easy to keep. They come in a natural range of solid browns --
green-brown, yellow-brown, red-brown and black-brown.

Are any of them white and are any of them pink or does the high heat
of the continent of Africa cause most of them to be darker in colour?
Are there any snakes that are endemic to Scandinavia or elsewhere in
Europe? A Snow snake maybe? Are any of them popular and kept by
many people in Europe and elsewhere around the world? It might be
interesting to have in one's collection: a Euopean ????? snake in
captivity? Maybe one snake from every continent. I could name each
one after the continent it is native to....??? What snake do you suppose
best represents the US? Peace.
